Get the complete manual for rebuilding after losing faith. Alyssa Grenfell's book is filled with poignant anecdotes and first hand advice from a girl who went from temple ceremonies to tank tops and lattes. In his forward, Dr. John Dehlin said, “This book is an essential companion for those who feel lost, alone, and confused once their Mormon shelf breaks.”
Buy your copy nowMy name is Alyssa Grenfell and I live in Austin, Texas. I was raised in a devout Mormon family. Blessed as a baby, baptized at eight, served a full time mission, graduated from Brigham Young University, and married in an LDS temple—I checked every righteous Mormon box.
I left the church and Utah at age 25 and moved to New York City, and said “damn” for the first time in my life. I have two children, I’m a teacher, and I like adding new tattoos to my growing collection. I’ve kept a little Mormonism in my life, but let the rest of it go.
Over the last five years, I have helped many friends navigate their own way out of the LDS church. I’ve received many messages from struggling acquaintances and family asking for advice on how to leave. While there is currently a mass exodus from the church, many people struggle to leave in a healthy, positive way. Most struggle with mental health and are alienated from friends, jobs, and family as a result of losing faith.
My experiences as a devout Mormon transitioning out of a controlling religion have inspired me to start the resource for others going through the same thing. Few can comprehend the massive chokehold this cult has on the mind of those who are taught to believe. I want to help people escape and live a free, full life—unlimited coffee included.
Struggling with a recent loss of faith? My book, How to Leave the Mormon Church, is here to help. This book is part memoir, part guidebook outlining the steps to completely—mentally, emotionally, and physically—leave The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. The book begins with the faith crisis all believing members pass through on their way out of the religion. It continues through sharing the decision to leave and reimagining a new identity after Mormonism. It guides the reader through difficult choices like how to stop wearing garments and how to choose comfortable “normal” underwear.
